Laboratory Safety Code of Conduct

The Upper Merion Area High School Science Department provides students with opportunity to investigate scientific concepts and develop scientific research skills by participating in laboratory activities, experiments, and projects. In order to maintain a safe and educational environment, students are expected to adhere to the following code of conduct.

1. Students will follow all written and verbal instructions when completing any lab activity. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the instructor for clarification before proceeding with the activity.

2. Students should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (i.e. goggles, gloves, apron, etc.) when conducting any laboratory activities.

3. Students should not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory.

4. Students need to be aware of the other students conducting experiments in the lab and should not engage in any reckless or distracting behavior.

5. Students need to be familiar with the safety procedures (eyewash station, fire extinguisher, fire drill exits, etc.) in the laboratory.

This code of conduct is designed to maintain a safe and educational environment in our high school science laboratories. Students who do not adhere to the laboratory safety code of conduct may be removed from the laboratory, receive reduced lab grades, and/or face disciplinary action.
